1.  Microsoft Security Essentials

Please don’t waste money on an Antivirus if your are a home user, sorry business owners you should pay for an antivirus server to protect all your workstations at once.  Microsoft Security Essentials (MCE) is free.  We really like it at ACT Computer Services because it is light weight, has auto updates and does a great job securing your computer.  From our experience Norton, McAfee and other commercial products didn’t do as well as MSE.  Also remember just because you install an Antivirus software doesn’t mean you are protected.  You need to make sure that you are always keeping your Antivirus software up to date.

2.  Stay away to P2P aka Limewire or Bit torrent clients

Long gone are the Napster days.  If you would like to download music, please use services like Amazon MP3 or Apple’s iTunes.  People think since they use Limewire that they are getting free music.  Well with that “free music” you are comprising your computer for online banking, or online purchases, paying for your computer to get cleaned out, and the time you lose because of how slow your computer runs.  Please stay away from “free music”  its not worth it.

3.  Windows updates

This one is one of the easiest thing you can do to protect your computer.  Every time that there is a security hole, Windows and Apple work to close that hole.  These fixes are called security fixes or updates.  If you check your computer once a week for software updates you will be sealing up any opportunities that virus designers or spam agents can use to infect your machine.  So please double check your computer today and make sure it is up to date.
